Laskar Pelangi
I watched an Indonesian movie adapted from bestseller novel “Laskar Pelangi”. Laskar means soldier, n pelangi means rainbow.
This movie based on a true story from Andrea Hirata, the author. It’s about story of amazing teachers who dedicated themselves to educate some unfortunate children. As a rule from the local govrnment, they need to have 10 children as students if they want to open the class. These poor children really hope to have a proper education because they couldnt afford to study in common schools which are expensive. There are teachers who willing to stay with them even they don’t get enough salary and the facilities of school is not good too.
For these teachers, education is not always material things, is not always good chairs and tables, or other facilities…A good student is not always a student achieved high rank of study. Education is about how the students and the teachers learn morale things, value of life, instead of knowledge itself. A knowledge without a morale value will only make us want to receive or get manythings. Indeed…in this life, we should give manythings to our environment.
This school faces so many obstacle. but they are together to solve the problems one by one. The film told about their desire to learn so many things in this world, and also to learn about friendship and sincerity.
Everyone should have courages to achieved his dreams. Never afraid to have dreams. How a father is willing to let go his only son to have a better education, instead of helping him fishing in a sea to earn the family living. He wants his only son to have highest dream and work hard to achieve it.
I didn’t read the novel. I might have different impression with others about this movie. But I believe this movie can deliver the message, which is “education is a right for everyone, education has large meaning, not only ballpoint and book, education is knowledge from universe”
I’m sorry about my lack of english. I’m too enthusiast to tell everyone about this movie. The speed of my words can’t describe my impression of this movie. No words can express it exactly.
You may open the link to find out more about this movie, but I’m afraid there is no English subtitle, so you have to wait the dvd. Please enjoy it!

Hello my friend! I read you article about Laskar Pelangi and I think it is a good movie. I hope they have an english translation of the movie or the novel. Education is really very important not only in helping a person improve his status in life, but also in helping a person achieve his dreams.
In the Philippines, during the Spanish occupation, the Spaniards did not allow Filipinos to study the Spanish language because they were afraid that too much knowledge might encourage the Filipinos to revolt. That is why our national hero, Jose Rizal, went to Europe to study medicine, several languages (I think about 29 languages), literature, and even opthalmology (to cure his mother’s eyes). His newly gained knowledge made him realize the importance of education, and he taught many Filipinos what he knew.
You know, your English is now better than in the past. I still imagine you talking while reading your blog.
I am reading a nice book written by Neil Gaiman. The book is “M for Magic”. He is really a funny and interesting author. I will tell you all about him after I finish the book, probably by Monday.
I hope you get to read this comment. I know you are busy. Thank you for this opportunity to comment on your article. Warmest regards to you and your family.
